Middle East Peace Process: Peace Deal Between Israel and the United Arab Emirates

In August 2019 I posted an article, Middle East Peace Plan and I followed up this article with another, Trump’s Middle East Peace Plan – Unveiled. In December 2015, before he was elected, Trump questioned whether Israel is committed to the peace process, rattling Israel’s government and many Republicans. “I have a real question as to whether or not both sides want to make it,” he said in an AP interview. “A lot will have to do with Israel and whether or not Israel wants to make the deal—whether or not Israel's willing to sacrifice certain things. They may not be, and I understand that, and I'm OK with that. But then you're just not going to have a deal.” The same day, he reiterated that sentiment during a Republican Jewish Coalition event.

On 14 November 2018 Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman resigned after a sharp disagreement over the Gaza ceasefire deal and withdrew his party, Yisrael Beiteinu, from the ruling coalition with Netanyahu’s party, which triggered an election in April 2019. Initially, he had opposed a draft law (supported by the ultra-Orthodox parties) which would allow full-time Torah students exemptions from serving in the IDF. Since then there has been two elections in September 2019, March 2020.

Kushner hails Bahrain conference as ‘tremendous success’

After yet another failed Israel election that failed to produce a majority winner, Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser, unveiled part one, the economic portion of US-sponsored Middle East, "Peace to Prosperity Workshop", at the Bahrain conference, in the Bahraini capital Manama on June 26, 2019. Hundreds of business people from all over the world with the common goal of bringing the region a step or two ahead convened in the main event venue. It included Israelis and Palestinians, Arabs and Jews, who put quiet but significant processes that have been taking place for years on the table, in the open. For years, Israel and moderate states in the region have been maintaining contact, with or without the blessing of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Part two of the Deal, relating to the land, was unveiled January 2020. I think that the release of the deal in January was very significant because it was forced upon them. In that circumstances worked against them, Trump and Netanyahu, because their goal, as stated so many times was to unveil the deal after the Israeli elections. In the end they had no choice but to release the peace initiative before the Israeli third elections in March, because there was no guarantee that Netanyahu will form a government. So, why were they so keen to do it after the elections? I think it is because of the need to limit transparency. The deal to be unveiled before the election provided a transparency for the voters: those that are against the two-state solution, bible-believing Christians (who are aware of God’s covenant promises to Israel and the Jews), and Settlers and Arab Israeli who feared violence from the Palestinians, if security and borders was not clearly defined. It is also gives an opportunity for journalists to analyse the content of the “Vision”, the “Peace to Prosperity” document. It became transparent that Netanyahu, Gantz and Trump had agreed on the deal, as verified by the White House Press Conference that announced the deal. If the deal was announced after the election, then the people will be forced to accept it. Soon, after it was announced, Israeli Arabs and settlers marched in their thousands because they realised that the land will be split and that they will be near the Palestinians. Furthermore, many will be in the land areas designated to the Palestinians, neighbours in fact. Israeli journalists, Rabbis and the public also raised their concerns, some more forcibly than others.

Another major concern is that the peace plan puts hundreds of biblical sites under Palestinian rule. The Jerusalem Post reported that “There are about 6,000 sites of historical and archaeological importance in the parts of Area C that are supposed to transfer to the Palestinians on July 1. A large number of archaeological sites in the West Bank, including many that are part of Jewish history and tradition, will be placed or remain under Palestinian control according to US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, Yediot Aharonot reported Tuesday. The government is discussing annexation of parts of the West Bank in connection with the plan. The move, which would extend Israeli law and sovereignty over parts of Israeli-controlled Area C, is supposed to begin as early as July 1.”

Many may not be aware that Netanyahu favours two state solution (but not when he is campaigning) and that Benny Gantz also supports a two-state solution. Netanyahu has never been consisted on his views regarding the two state solution, he continuously accepted the concept of creating a Palestinian state in 2009, but during his 2015 election campaign when asked directly “whether no Palestinian state would be created under his leadership, the prime minister answered: “Indeed.” A year after the 2015 election he told the Knesset that he was in favour of two-state solutions with conditions and mocked an opposition leader when he said “a negotiated two-state solution was not currently possible debate”, Netanyahu replied “It seems you are the last to realize the reality.” Even Netanyahu's father, a Hebrew and bible scholar, was disappointed at Netanyahu's willingness to compromise.

I may be wrong, it’s just a speculation on my part, but I don’t think it is a coincidence that the Israeli government collapsed and that the two largest parties twice failed to form a government. I even wrote at the time that Netanyahu and Gantz will form a unity government, encouraged by the Trump Administration and that the failure of the elections was the result of closed negotiations behind the scenes to formulate the deal. This became true when Netanyahu and Gantz formed a united government. I believe that whatever happens in Israeli, in relation to peace negotiations and the land, there is no coincidence. But even now the collation is marred by disputes and there is even a talk of 4th election as well as Netanyahu facing corruption charges.

What I found disappointing more is the lack of biblical discernment regarding the content of the Deal by Christians, even evangelical Christians who understand the prophetic significance of the land. They were streams of YouTube videos, cable news interviews, articles and prophecy updates hailing the deal and Trump. Unfortunately, they have allowed their political allegiance to cloud their judgement. It is seemed that many American Christians and evangelicals think that Trump can do no wrong. It is impossible to even offer criticise on Trump’s actions without being labelled as a “leftie” or Trump hater, he is on a pedal stool that endangers the ability to voice concerns or critical thinking. Some of you reading this, will probably stop now. But let me make myself clear, I do not hate Trump rather I pray for him as the bible admonishes us to do so. Nor do I dislike Netanyahu, in fact I make a point of watching, out of all the leaders, his annual speeches at the UN General Assembly and if you read my earlier posts, before this fiasco of a deal, you will know of my defence and opinion of him. But I am afraid he has made a grave error in judgment in his pursue with normalising relations with the Arab and Islamic nations, even his father, who died in 2012, expressed his opposition to dividing the land and granting the Palestinians a state within Israel. If we love someone and we see them making decisions that could be disastrous for them, do we not warn them in love. In praying for governmental leaders, we must try to understand the level of precious that they are under.

It is impossible to comprehend what happens behind the scenes of daily politics, advisers who brief against them, betray them or push through their own agendas. Many have to deal with daily upheavals of policies, decisions, emergency and security issues as well the media and their own family lives, often their character or family is attacked. It is easy to lead dictatorially than lead a democratic government, although the latter can be debatable, with the advent of globalisation and so called “international order” with many agendas of abolishing nationalistic aspirations but at least, for now, the living conditions of people cannot be compared to Iran, North Korea, and so on. It is why we should pray for them, even the Apostle admonished the early church to do so under the reign of Nero.

We must stand against injustice and corruption no matter how much we like a political figure. Being a Christian is not about the politics of the left or right, or flag rather is recognising that this world is not our home, we are strangers and aliens, exiles (Hebrews 11). The bible says “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever (1 John2) and again “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind” (Ephesians 2). We are not to conform to this world but instead are called to be separate. Be active on the things of God and put the Word of God above your political views or party.

I find it difficult to understand how conservative Christians or evangelicals, specially in America, are so obsessed with what the “left” is doing. It shocks me how they ignore basic humanity, compassion and love for those who are poor, homeless or illegal immigrants, fuelled by their passion for capitalism, because of their rightful fear of socialism or obtaining the “American dream”. Unfortunately, this has also influenced many Christian hearts and Christian media. If I was an American, I will never vote for the democrats or in the UK labour because of their policies on biblical values that I hold but I also dislike the Republicans and the Conservative Parties for the preference of the rich and powerful, giving taxes for the rich and corporation while the poor are castigated and underrepresented. So, I vote but I have no allegiance but God.

Since the Trump's Middle East Peace Plan was unveiled in January 2020, the US, like other nations have suffered from the impact of the Coronavirus, more so the US economy. Trump, the Administration, his supporters and ring wing commentators have been boasting of Trump's economical and job creation as his success. But there are people who love Israel and see the danger, not from a biblical aspect, that having a Palestinians state jeopardises Israel’s security. Others include Christians and evangelicals who understand the consequences of parting God’s land and His city, Jerusalem. Initially, having been bombarded with Christians news feeds of how wonderful the deal was, I finally came across number of Pastors who, having read the document, like me (only the essentials sections), expressed their dismay. However, recently I came across Michelle Bachmann’s statement. Michelle is a former Republican representative and a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2012 U.S. presidential election, she stated:

“On Jan. 28, 2020, a plan was revealed that envisioned a dividing of the covenant and a division of Jerusalem,” Bachmann said. “Since that time, we have seen nothing but distress. The Bible speaks of that in Zechariah: Anyone who burdens themselves with a division of Jerusalem will be cut themselves upon a rock. Nations will be destroyed, Isaiah 60 says, if they do not follow the word of God. Messiah will judge nations, Psalm 2:12 says. It’s very clear. That’s why this warning was given to various high officials prior to the release of this plan. Now warnings are given again that perhaps this distress could be removed from our nation if we would withdraw the maps in this plan that envision the division of the biblical land and the division of Jerusalem.” “Jerusalem is an eternal, undivided city and must never be divided,” Bachmann continued. “I would call upon the White House to withdraw that plan, and it just may be that the Lord and his grace and mercy may likely lift the distress upon our land even in our time and resume his hand of favor, which was so clear and evident until Jan. 28, 2020. That is my request. That is my prayer. I love our president. I pray for him daily. I just ask the question: In light of scripture, in light of the day that we live in, could it be that this distress could have in part been caused by this? And could it be that this distress would be relieved if action would be taken to come into conformity with a clear word of God?”

It was through Pastor Andy Wood’s recent YouTube video I discovered Michelle Bachmann’s statement; he further expands on this in light of the destructive events in the US. Pastor Andy Woods’ video, "The Great Global Rest part 1, the remarks are timed at 1:09 - 1:29:52. Over 49 million have lost employment, the economy crashed initially and the Federal Reserve Bank has been printing money just to keep the market from crashing even further. Added to that are the unprecedented civil unrest, lawlessness, defunding the police, destruction civic buildings and statues and widespread looting, criminal damages, and violence and murders. For example, 102 died during a murderous spree in Chicago in a single weekend. Groups like Antifa and BLM are still demonstrating and causing havoc. The civil unrest also included the Whitehouse: the unrest came to Donald Trump’s doorstep as protesters clash with the Secret Service and police outside the White House. Armoured Secret Service, along with District of Columbia police and park police, lined up in front of the protesters, forming a barricade as the US president returned to the White House from a trip to Florida. Lafayette Square, the park in front of the executive mansion, was sealed off with steel barriers. Another protest at the White House occurred when a crowd of hundreds had gathered in front of the president’s residence and Trump tweeted that protesters could have been attacked with “vicious dogs and ominous weapons” wielded by the US Secret Service.

Recently, President Trump was abruptly escorted away from the White House briefing room just a few minutes after taking the podium for a press briefing, but quickly returned to tell reporters, "There was a shooting outside of the White House." The president said an armed person was shot by Secret Service and has been taken to the hospital. The USA has also been experiencing an increasingly dangerous and damaging extreme weather that included earthquakes, winds and storms, and floods causing widespread destruction of agricultural / farming which meant damage done to crops that could affect food supplies. There were fires in California and power cuts specially in New York.

Peace Deal Between Israel and the United Arab Emirates

So, to summarise, under Trump’s plan, the U.S. would formally recognize a Palestinian state, the Palestinians would be allowed to set up a capital in East Jerusalem, and the amount of territory under Palestinian control would double and the biblical sites will be at risk. Does that sound OK to you? I now we have another deal that opens doors but is rift with contradictions, denials and misinformation. The Abrahamic Covenant included the promise of land (Genesis 12:1). It was a specific land, an actual property, with dimensions specified in Genesis 15:18–21. In Genesis 13:15, God gives Abraham all the land that he can see, and the gift is declared to be “forever.” God was not going to renege on His promise. The territory given as part of the Abrahamic Covenant is expanded in Deuteronomy 30:1–10.

The Israel–United Arab Emirates peace agreement, or the Abraham Accord, was agreed by Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on August 13, 2020. The UAE is the third Arab country, after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, to formally normalize its relationship with Israel, as well as the first Persian Gulf country to do so. The United Arab sometimes simply called the Emirates is a sovereign state in Western Asia at the northeast end of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman to the east and Saudi Arabia to the south and west, as well as sharing maritime borders with Qatar to the west and Iran to the north. The sovereign absolute monarchy is a federation of seven emirates consisting of Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. Their boundaries are complex, with numerous enclaves within the various emirates. Each emirate is governed by a ruler; together, they jointly form the Federal Supreme Council. One of the rulers serves as the President of the United Arab Emirates.

Concurrently, Israel has agreed to suspend plans for annexing parts of the West Bank. The agreement normalizes what had long been informal but robust foreign relations between the two countries. However, cracks in the deal became quickly apparent after its announcement on Thursday, with Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, saying there was “no change” to his annexation plans, while the UAE insisted that it “immediately stops annexation”.

We are living in an unprecedented time politically, economically, socially, culturally and spiritually. This week was one of those unprecedented moments, it concerns Israel and its neighbours, the Arab Nations. Though, it is encouraging that so many are now looking to normalise relations with Israel, I can't help but feel cautious. I love Israel and I’m a huge supporter for the Jews to return to their land as prophesied by the Prophets in the Torah / Bible.

From the times of Ishmael, Esau and until recently her neighbours, the Arab and Islamic nations, have been in open hatred against the Jews. I don’t need to get into commentary about this as we are all aware of this, even from the biased media. So many explanations have been offered for the failure of successive US administrations to achieve that peace, but the answer is in Morsi’s words: “Why would one make peace with bloodsuckers and descendants of apes and monkeys?”.

I am concerned that once again Israel is been forced to give up land for the sake of peace and that the recent announcement of the UAE-Israel Peace and plans for more Arab nations to do so could be a trap, much like the scene depicted in Psalm 83.

They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones. 4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” 5 For they have consulted together with one consent; They form a confederacy against You: 6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites; 7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8Assyria also has joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot.

We now that there will be a final peace treaty, brokered by the Antichrist:

26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate. Daniel 9

The Antichrist is the Prince that is to come "And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary." It was the Roman Empire, I wrote extensively about this, that destroyed the second Temple, therefore the Antichrist will be from the Revived Roman Empire i.e. a gentile but have a Jewish heritage or deceive the Jews that he is Jewish. The Jewish identity of the Antichrist could be because of the scripture in John, in that Jesus being Jewish was not accepted by the religious leaders although all the prophetic symbols and signs was evident:

I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John 5: 43

The Jews are waiting for this leader and believe that “a dynamic Jewish leader, a direct descendant of the Davidic dynasty, who will rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, and gather Jews from all over the world and bring them back to the Land of Israel. All the nations of the world will recognize Moshiach to be a world leader, and will accept his dominion.” This is why, over the years, they have been preparing the temple, worship service, training priests, commissioning architectural plans for the Temple Building.

Another alternative, as to why the Jews will accept the Antichrist could be the role of the False Prophet, who will direct the masses to worship the Beast and the Antichrist in the later part of the 7 year tribulation. There is an intriguing scripture in Revelation 13 that states the “beast rising up out of the sea”. The sea in prophecy usually refers to the gentile world and its people but John, when describing the False Prophet, he said “I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon”, because of the difference many bible prophecy teachers believe that the False Prophet could be Jewish. According to some prophecy students and teachers the Pope will be the one to usher in the one world religion. The Catholic Church, for decades has been forging interfaith (variety of “Christian” denominations). Since Vatican II, there has been a widespread active promotion of interreligious unity initiatives, including all religions, pagans, and so on. What if a Jewish Pope comes on the scene? I’m not aware of any Jewish Catholic Cardinals currently, after many attempts on Google search but there is a precedence, though he never reached the role of a Pope, although there have been legends circulated in the Jewish world over the centuries. The various versions agree that there was a Jewish boy who was abducted and raised as a Christian, he became a priest and in time a pope, he learned or knew of his Jewish origins and he finally returned to Judaism.

In the complex relationship between Catholicism and Judaism in 20th-century France, there is the remarkable career of Jean-Marie Lustiger, who died of cancer aged 80 in 2007. Born Aaron Lustiger, to a family of Polish-Jewish immigrants. At the age of 13 he converted to Catholicism and Lustiger's Jewish father tried unsuccessfully to have his son's baptism annulled, and even sought the help of the chief rabbi of Paris. Lustiger, his father, and sister sought refuge in unoccupied southern France, while his mother returned to Paris to run the family business. In September 1942, his mother was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp where she was murdered the following year. The surviving family returned to Paris at the end of the war.

He rose to the summit of the French Catholic hierarchy, ending his career as Cardinal Archbishop of Paris and a leading figure in the early stages of interfaith relations. At one time he was even mentioned as a possible successor to Pope John Paul II.

Unfortunately, because of the rise of Rabbinic Judaism in Israel and elsewhere, it is causing many to follow wild and dangerous theories and I can see how easily they will be willing to embrace the “one” who offers them The Temple and that bring a “false peace”. I recently posted a series of articles covering, interfaith and interreligious movement and how various Rabbis and even “evangelical “leaders are active in this movement. In this YouTube video, Anticipating the Messiah, it shows how in the Israeli media there has been a significant increase in the number of rabbis talking about the coming of the Messiah of Israel, including the growing proclamations by leading Rabbis of His imminent arrival. Although these declarations appears to parallel with the return of Jesus the Messiah, after Jacob’s Troubles, it is a parallel that is deceptive because these rabbis based their teachings on a mixture of mysticism, Kabbalah, biblical scriptures and prophecies by rabbis, sages and prophecies in the Talmud and various rabbinic teachings. These ideas, myths and mixing of biblical scriptures and prophecies, is part of the teachings that is so prevalent in Rabbinic Judaism. I believe that, because of these teachings and the public announcements of these modern Rabbis and the rise of religious Jewish leaders, will lead to the ultimate deception of receiving the Antichrist and the False Prophet.

Trump's Peace Plan is not the final deal because that happens in the 7-year Tribulation, the last week of Jeremiah's 70-week prophecy. But scripture gives us a clue as to the deal in that he (the Antichrist) will "confirm a covenant with many for one week;". One week meaning seven years which he breaks the agreement in the middle of the tribulation. The Hebrew word used here is Gabar which means confirm, strength, might, to make strong: Definition to prevail, have strength, be strong, be powerful, be mighty, be great (Qal) to be strong, mighty to prevail (Piel) to make strong, strengthen (Hiphil) to confirm, give strength to confirm (a covenant) (Hithpael) to show oneself mighty to act proudly (toward God) So, this current deal or another could be the one that will be confirmed. As a foreigner I always have to check the meaning of words and the word confirm means "establish the truth or correctness of (something previously believed or suspected to be the case)." And no Trump is not the Antichrist and this deal is not the covenant but could be the forerunner that will be confirmed. Interestingly, Isaiah refers to a deal that will be annual i.e. cancelled similar to Daniel’s prophecy:

Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it. Isaiah 18

A major concern is that the deal between Israel and the UAE is called the Abraham Accord. It is insulting that Abraham is used for deal that will include the eventual division of the land compared to the Abrahamic Covenant. But it also coincides with another interesting aspect which is the role the Pope and the Interfaith plays in the UAE-Israel deal.

In February 2019, the Pope visited the UAE for a three-day Papal tour. On February 3, 2019, Pope Francis landed in the Abu Dhabi Presidential Airport where he was greeted by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and then Dr. Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar University, which serves as the lead source for Sunni Islam education, and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders. This visit also makes him the first Pope to visit an area in the Arabian Peninsula. On February 4, the Pope attended the Interfaith Meeting, during which he and el-Tayeb signed “A Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together”, that called for religious tolerance and dialogue. The same day, the Pope spoke at the Abu Dhabi Founder's Memorial, held a meeting with el-Tayeb and other Muslim elders at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and held a meeting with Crown Prince Zayed at the Presidential Palace. On February 5, Pope Francis concluded his trip after giving a mass in front of a large crowd, estimated at 180,000, at Zayed Sports City.

An interfaith council to oversee projects advancing tolerance was formed as a result of the declaration, and named the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity. The Abrahamic Family House is its first initiative, it signals Abraham as being the father of the main religions Jews, Christians and Muslims, but we know, as bible believing Christians, that the Abraham of Judaism and Christianity is not the same as the one quoted in the Quran. Anyhow, it is a major step for public worship of Judaism in gulf state. The United Arab Emirates is scheduled to build the new synagogue as part of an interfaith compound that will also house a mosque and church and is reportedly set to open in 2022. The Higher Committee of Human Fraternity is currently comprised of nine members: five Muslims; one Jew, a rabbi; two Catholics, members of the Roman Curia; and one United Nations official. Timeline of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity: https://www.forhumanfraternity.org/news-media

At the time, I knew immediately, when I came across the details about the Pope visit to the UAE, that it was significant. But I was convinced that the plan for the three buildings was just a conceptual idea, since there was no news of formal normalisation of relations between the UAE and Israel. It just goes to show how fast things are moving. I do not think it is a coincidence that these three buildings are labelled as "Abrahamic Family House" and that the deal unveiled mentions Abraham. It is obvious that the Pope’s visit, the interfaith document, the conceptual design of the buildings and the peace deal was planned ahead in considerable details and many months ago or even years or at least until Trump was elected. If they can build a synagogue and a church in the UAE, it may also include the possibility of a Temple in Jerusalem, when other Arab and Islamic nations normalise relations with Israel. One stone at a time for acceptance and the appeasement of the masses through favourable media build-up, especially since the Pope and the Muslims are involved.

The Trump Administration, specifically Kushner, who is an orthodox Jew, have highlighted in the Middle East Peace to Prosperity document and the subsequent press conference announcing the UAE-Israel deal including post deal interviews, that the Muslims now have the opportunity to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is very telling that little is documented or stated of the Jews’ lack of access to the Temple Mount. When I was in Israel, I was very surprised of the restrictions and the little area allocated to them at specific time. Maybe, the reports of Saudi Arabia, jointly or solely managing the Temple Mount area, will change that and I speculate that a revised access could be part of the overall deal.

Although many are failing to see the significance of these events and others appease or pay tribute to Trump and Netanyahu, because of political reasons, it is nevertheless unprecedented times that we are living in.

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, “Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time? Luke 12

For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5
